The cultivation of Haribhanga, a superior variety of mango is getting popular at Badaganj, Pirganj and Mithapukur upazilas in Rangpur district and a large number of growers are making huge profit from this fleshy and tasty fruit.
According to the sources of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) over 5,000 farmers have been cultivating the mango in their orchards and homesteads in the upazilas under the district.
This variety of mango is being cultivated on a large scale at Padaganj, Khoragach, Zarullapur, Santoshpur, Paikarerhat, Rukniganj, Siraj, Tekani, Moyenpur, Kadamtola, Lalpukur, Shukurerhat, Fulchowki, Tilakpara, Kashimpur, Balua, Matherhat and some other villages under Mithapukur upazila.
The mango is also being cultivated at Nagerhat, Chowpothirhat, Kanchabari, Gopalpur, Airamri, and Mandalpara under Badarganj upazila, and Chatra, Silimpur, Projapara and some other villages under Pirganj upazila, the DAE sources said.
Hasanur Rahman of Shukurerhat area under Mithapukur upazila is one of the farmers who has changed his fortune cultivating Haribhanga. He told the FE that he has 250 trees in his orchard and he earned over Tk 1,20,000 by selling mango this year.
Jaynal Abedin, another farmer at Padaganj area under Mithapukur upazila said that he cultivated Haribhanga in 2 acres of land and he has already earned Tk 0.2 million and is optimistic about achieving more profit during this year.
Locals said a large number of traders from Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Barisal, Khulna, Sylhet and other parts of the country are thronging the local markets to buy the delicious fruit from here.
Agri-scientist Dr MA Mazid at Rangpur Hub of Cereal Systems Initiative in South Asia said cultivation of Haribhanga mango has become very popular in the district and a good number of people are showing their interest in its cultivation.
